Development of bio-related projects which apply hydroxyapatite

PENTAX newly developed the ¡ÈCELLYARD™,¡É a carrier for cell culture, using the significantly biocompatible bioceramics ¡Èhydroxyapatite,¡É whose constituents are the same as those of human bone. PENTAX is looking into developing projects in the field of cell culture-related biotechnology.
Ever since PENTAX released ¡ÈAPACERAM¡É for use as artificial dental roots in 1983, it produced and distributed other products, such as bone-regenerating agents, columns, virus adsorption masks, and foot deodorant sprays. In addition, in October of 2002, PENTAX developed the dengue virus infection test reagent kit and other products where the biocompatible and protein adsorptive properties of the hydroxyapatite are applied. Our latest ¡ÈCELLYARD™¡É series was developed using hydroxyapatite, this time as the carrier for cell cultures.

¡ÖCELLYARD™ HA scaffold¡×¡¿¡ÖCELLYARD™ pellet¡×

These are carriers with hydroxyapatites molded into round shapes (¦µ5x2, ¦µ13x2) and sintered. The scaffolds or pellets are placed on the culture plate, above which the cells are disseminated to allow them to be cultured.
The ¡ÈCELLYARD™ HA scaffold¡É is a madreporite with a porosity of 50%, and has similar qualities as the apatites used in artificial bones for medical purposes, making it ideal for the culture of osteoblasts and stem cells.
The ¡ÈCELLYARD™ pellet¡É is dense with a porosity of 0%. It can be used to replace ivory (enamel), which is now difficult to obtain, for osteoclastogenesis experiments. In addition, it is suitable for the culture of other cells such as osteoblasts.
In any case, both scaffolds and pellets are used as a carrier for experiments in regenerative medicine related to the formation of bones (cultured bones) and bone dissolution.

Features

As with the high-purity hydroxyapatite, they adsorb various proteins and cells.

  1. Two types are available according to the purpose of use: the madreporite “CELLYARD™ HA scaffold” and the dense “CELLYARD™ pellet.”
  2. The sizes are suitable for 96-well and 24-well microplates.
  3. The autoclave allows for high-temperature and high-pressure sterilization (121°C, 20 minutes).
  4. They can be stained by common methods such as HE staining and toluidine blue staining.
